Awards season usually means tiny portions and nervous speeches. We wanted something with more greaseproof paper. For the 2026 Flavourz Road-Trip Ten, we asked readers, followed local reputations and made a few heroic detours to find independent takeaways that are worth planning a day around. Not just good for your postcode — good enough to justify a service-station pasty on the way.
This is not a scientific league table. It is a road-trip shortlist, ranked on flavour, value and the all-important worth-the-trip factor. Scores are out of 10, and the final order leans towards one simple question: would we genuinely drive 90 minutes for this? No free meals changed hands. Where we could not visit in person, we leaned on reader nominations and very loud local word of mouth.
How the scoring works
Flavour is king: does it taste of something worth remembering? Value covers portion size, price and whether you feel mildly smug afterwards. Worth the trip is the x-factor: the queue, the paper bag, the local legend, the sauce you would drive back for. A 9-plus in that last column can drag a takeaway up the list.
10. Little Lahore, Edinburgh — 7.8/10
A late-night Edinburgh favourite with a proper karahi kick. The chicken karahi is glossy, gingery and generous, and the naan arrives blistered rather than bored. Flavour 8, value 8, worth the trip 7. It is a brilliant city takeaway rather than a pilgrimage, but if you are already in town, make it your tea.
9. Bao Bap, Manchester — 8.0/10
Tiny menu, big personality. These Taiwanese-style gua bao are pillowy, sticky and packed with pickled crunch. The pork belly number is the one to order, with a chilli oil that sneaks up on you. Flavour 8.5, value 7.5, worth the trip 8. It is a lunch stop that turns a northern city break into a proper scran crawl.
8. Marrow & Moss, Bristol — 8.1/10
Proof that veggie takeaways can be filthy in the best way. The smoked mushroom kebab is meaty enough to silence the doubters, and the herby flatbreads are worth the mess. Flavour 8.5, value 8, worth the trip 8. Bristol readers nominated this one hard, and we can see why.
7. The Salt Cod, Whitby — 8.2/10
You go for the haddock, but you stay for the view and the batter. Crisp, pale and not greasy, with chips that hold their shape all the way to the seafront bench. Flavour 8.5, value 7.5, worth the trip 8.5. It is a classic seaside stop, and the seagulls agree — keep your guard up.
6. Jerk Junction, Birmingham — 8.4/10
A Birmingham reader pick with serious smoke. The jerk chicken has proper scotch bonnet heat, the rice and peas are coconutty, and the plantain is caramelised at the edges. Flavour 9, value 8.5, worth the trip 8. This is the kind of takeaway that makes a Friday feel like an event.
5. Pitta Pit, Leeds — 8.5/10
A no-frills doner shop with a cult local following and a chilli sauce recipe that should probably be protected by law. The lamb is carved properly, the pitta is warm, and the salad is not an afterthought. Flavour 8.5, value 9, worth the trip 8.5. Bring cash, bring an appetite, bring napkins.
4. The Curry Shack, Bradford — 8.7/10
Bradford does curry properly, and this little counter is a fine example. The lamb nihari is slow, rich and spiced with confidence; the naan is enormous. Flavour 9, value 9, worth the trip 8.5. It is not fancy. It is not trying to be. It is just very good.
3. Oyster & Chip, Belfast — 8.8/10
A fish supper with a sense of humour and a very serious fryer. The cod is flaky, the batter is crisp, and the chips are proper chippy chips — soft in the middle, crunchy at the edges. Flavour 9, value 8.5, worth the trip 9. Belfast readers, we owe you one.
2. The Frying Scotsman, Glasgow — 9.1/10
Frying since 1968, which is either a lovely piece of history or a warning that they have had a long time to get it right. The haddock is pristine, the beef dripping gives the chips a deep savoury note, and the queue moves faster than you expect. Flavour 9.5, value 9, worth the trip 9. This is a chippy that understands the assignment.
1. The Lamb & Lavash, Cardiff — 9.3/10
The cult Cardiff kebab shop that has readers whispering about garlic sauce like it is a state secret. The lamb shish is charred, juicy and properly seasoned; the lavash is warm; the chilli sauce has a slow, bright kick. Flavour 9.5, value 9.5, worth the trip 10. We would drive to Cardiff for this, and that is before we have even discussed the chips.
The worth-the-trip verdict
The best takeaways are not always the ones with the fanciest branding or the longest queue. They are the ones that make a journey feel like part of the meal. This year’s list has a chippy that has been doing its thing since 1968, a Cardiff kebab shop with a cult following and a handful of local heroes that deserve a wider postcode. If you are planning a food-focused road trip in 2026, start here.
